It’s about time. We finally have Tesla Model 3 track pads. An optimized motorsport pad for those of you using our MPP.R brake systems. Pagid is a German pad manufacturer with roots back to 1925. Pagid pads are used in 24hr endurance racing by many professional motorsport teams all over the world at the highest levels of GT3 and Formula car motorsport. There are only a handful of pad manufacturers out there who are relied on for these grueling 24hr races – and Pagid is one of them. As an example, Corvette racing one the GTLM championship in 2020 using Pagid pads. That’s about as high as it gets with sportscar racing!
While these are more costly than other pads, as they are an endurance pad, they are very easy on rotors and they do not wear quickly. So actually, these pads could end up being the best value option out there for Tesla Model 3 track pads – especially if you consider the time (cost) it takes to swap pads. We’ve tested these pads extensively with our MPP.R brake systems and they check all of our boxes. We’ve never been able to overheat the brake system, even during our battery overheat testing – where we accelerate and brake repeatedly with no pause from 50mph-95mph until the battery overheats. The rotors continue to look as you’d expect a motorsport rotor should look – smooth with a light tinge of brake pad transfer material. No abrasive “machining” of the rotor going on here.
Brake Pad Characteristics:
While it is hard to compare multiple different compounds, the RSL 29 is a medium friction compound, and if you’re using an aggressive pad on the opposite axle there will likely be a difference in brake bias. This may be desirable depending on your setup. Pagid lists the friction as 0.42-0.44 in the operating range of the pad.
The pads perform well from an initial cold application, and with the boosted brakes of the Tesla you need not worry about stopping performance or safety “while cold.” The brakes can easily activate ABS even from ambient temperature.
The pads have other features that are beneficial to the application, such as being designed to work with ABS and focusing on low thermal conductivity to reduce heating of the brake fluid. The pads are also designed to meet or exceed all current ecological standards in the automotive industry. Lastly, the RSL29 is designed to be very easy to bed in, so it is a great track day pad compound.
The rear pads do not have the OEM spider clips. They are intended for use with our MPP.R rear big brake upgrade which retains the pad using our own retention clip.
Instructions based on Pagid’s instructions slightly altered for Tesla Model 3 users:
- 10 decelerations with medium pressure (approx 0.6 G’s) from 90mph to 50mph
- 5 decelerations at threshold pressure (approx 0.9-1.0 G’s) from 90mph to 40mph without ABS activation. Rapid acceleration between braking events
- 5 decelerations with medium pressure (approx 0.6 G’s) from 90mph to 50mph
**Note that if 90mph is not achievable, a slightly higher pressure from a lower speed is fine (I.E. 75 mph to 30mph)
